The Bendigo Writers Council began in 1990, when Doris Leadbetter, Beryl Doble, Bette McLaughlin, Carmel Williams, and others all shared the same opinion. They felt that there was a need here in Bendigo for something more, as far as workshops and stimulus for writers went.
The Council were to talk, encourage and advise in many different aspects of the writing world. In the past years, they have covered science fiction, poetry, short-story writing, bush ballads, genealogy, biography, journalism, romance, erotica, crime and children's stories.
Today there is strong support from the community to keep the council running, along with an active committee.
